University of Chicago Medicine - Zoology Infrastructure Plan

MEPIS was commissioned by Middough to review and evaluate the feasibility of installing a new Central Ventilation System in the attic of the Zoology building at the University of Chicago Medicine.  This new system would replace the numerous individual air-handling units which serve various laboratory spaces on each of the floors. The following options were requested to be considered and priced.

  • Option #1, design and construction cost associated with a new combined AHU system for the 2nd and 3rd floors.
  • Option #2, design and construction cost associated with a new combined AHU system for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors.

MEPIS performed a site survey of the attic mechanical space, reviewed the steam and hydronic systems originating from the basement and evaluated potential shaft locations in each of the labs on floors 2, 3, and 4.  Measurements and dimensions were recorded at two potential air-handling unit locations on both the East and West sides of the attic.

Based on the ventilation calculations, air-handling units were selected that can satisfy the airflow requirements of each of the floors.
