University of Chicago Medicine | Abbott Hall AHU Replacement

Abbott Hall is a 6-story laboratory building for the University of Chicago’s Medical Center. MEPIS was commissioned alongside BR+A to provide design services for the replacement of a major Air Handling Unit (AHU) in the 6th floor that served mostly 5th floor laboratories, with the additional challenge that the air duct system cannot be completely offline for a large period of time due to the sensitive nature of the laboratories served by this unit.

MEPIS and BR+A documented the existing conditions and provided floor plans and specifications for the design of the new AHU. Mechanical plans include providing a temporary supply duct from the basement up to the 6th floor unit to serve the existing ductwork, a new AHU to be reconnected to existing ductwork, and reconnection to existing steam piping and chilled water piping. Electrical support is provided by providing power to the new AHU’s fans and associated controls. Architectural and Structural support was also provided for accommodating the new units.
