Northwestern University Surveying and Mapping of the Electrical Distribution System

MEPIS was hired to perform on site field observations and documenting the normal, emergency and essential power distribution system in its entirety. Field observation and documenting consist of mapping the actual installations as they relate to each wing section of Tech building wich has an approximate estimated square footage of 887,320.00. The project included a review and tabulating existing metered demand capacity, calculating the available spare capacity of each major piece of equipment, and feeders. Field measurements (width x depth x height) of all electrical distribution equipment were taken--including Main Substations, switchgears, switchboards, panelboards and motor control centers and asbuilts drawings for each main electrical room, electrical closet and mechanical rooms were generated.

A short-circuit, selective coordination, and arc flash study was performed as part of the contract. Verified and documented actual circuit breakers and/or fuse types (size, KAIC rating, and settings), main feeder’s sizes (i.e. conduit and wire size, feeder lengths, and ground), and bus ratings. Data was input into SKM, where the analyses were performed. A report was generated along with arc flash labels for the entire system.
